Frequently asked questions.
What should I pack my clothes and personal items in?
When you meet your guides they will help you repack all of your items into water tight barrels and dry bags. This ensures that all your clothing and other items will stay nice and dry no matter the weather. You can bring your own small pack for day trips etc.
What do I need to bring?
A personalized gear list will be provided for each trip. Most camping gear, canoes, paddles, pfd’s etc. will be provided and are included in the price. Your guide will be in contact to plan your trip and provide details on what is needed for your trip.
Will we have cell service in the backcountry?
Most locations in the backcountry will have unreliable service at best. Your guide will be carrying a Garmin InReach satellite communication device. This makes it possible to check in with family or friends throughout your trip, or call for help in the worst case scenario.
What will we eat?
Our tradition is to have a fresh steak and potato on the first evening of the trip. We will prepare a lot of dehydrated food prior to a trip in and also have a selection of some fresh food. We will work with you to find the best menu to suit your taste and since we make the food we can avoid anything you are allergic to or just plain don’t like. Fishing, hunting and foraging for food are always options on our trips as well. Let us know ahead of time if you desire to try fishing and if needed we will help you obtain an Ontario fishing license.
What areas do you offer canoe and hiking trips in?
Algonquin Park, Temagami, French River, Killarney PP, Mississagi River PP, Algoma Headwaters and everywhere in between. Just ask and there’s a good chance we’ve been there, and even if we haven’t we’ll put together a solid trip plan you can be confident in. Ontario offers world class canoe camping destinations.
Is there a minimum group size?
No, we would love for you to join a trip already being planned or do a one on one with your guide.
Can I bring my dog on the trip with me?
Yes, we would love to have your furry friend join us. We are dog lovers and always bring our dogs on our personal trips. Keep in mind, just like you, your dog needs to be able to endure the rigors of the adventure you choose.
Just how difficult is a backcountry canoe/hiking trip?
A backcountry trip can be as difficult as you would like it to be. The great thing about a custom trip is that we will work with you and assess what kind of trip we think you will get the most out of.
What about bathrooms?
Many of the campsites we stay at do have a wooden box called a thunderbox, similar to a sitting on a toilet.
In many cases there will be no thunderbox on a site, or nature may call during a portage for example. Your Guides will explain how to and provide the necessary tools prior to departure.
Can I bring alcohol or marijuana on the trip?
We encourage campers (who are of legal drinking age) to bring alcoholic beverages of choice (no glass bottles) or marijuana on their trip to enjoy if they wish. These must be enjoyed responsibly.
How much should I tip my guides?
Any form of a gratuity is greatly appreciated and by no means mandatory or expected.
Industry Guideline (to be split between guides): $20-30/day/client, $15/day/child
